Small White

On the wing between April and October, this common species is found across a broad range of habitats. It’s a lovely little butterfly, but gardeners with vegetable patches won’t be quite so enthusiastic about it, due to the caterpillar having an appetite for members of the cabbage family.

The small white can be easily mistaken for similar species, namely the large white (they really got creative with the names here) and the green-veined white. In addition to the size difference, the small white can be told apart due to having less black on the tips of the forewings than the former, and having a plain yellowish colour on the underside of its wings, unlike the latter.
